China–Africa Relations

My research on China–Africa relations examines how Chinese economic, political, technological and security engagement interacts with African institutions, domestic politics and democratic norms. I focus on African agency, showing how governments, elites, civil society and non-state actors negotiate, adapt to or resist China’s influence. I have worked on Chinese non-state legitimation in East Africa, served as Tanzania expert for the China Index, and contributed to USAID research on Chinese soft power and surveillance. My work on Tanzania was presented at the China in the World Summit.
